ARMADILLOS

Dasypus Novemcinctus - 9-Banded Variety

GENERAL INFO: Tough, bony armor and sharp claws have earned the nine-banded armadillo a reputation as a durable and powerful digger. They have very poor eyesight and rely primarily on their sense of smell and hearing to hunt for bugs, grubs and worms - their preferred food sources.

THREAT: Lawn and garden damage can result from the animal's burrowing and feeding activities. Most people recognize them when they see holes in the yard or burrows around their house perimeter. Their burrows can sometimes destroy pipes and wires; the holes can weaken or crack structures. They are not a significant disease or pathogen threat. Their low core body temperature and weak immune system make them susceptible to a variety of diseases, however.

REMOVAL / PREVENTION: The only solution is to trap and remove them from the site. Trapping armadillos is difficult since they cannot be baited. The key to trapping armadillos is in the placement of traps and directional barriers. This setup is based on a knowledge of armadillo behavior. Deterrents on the market are largely unsuccessful. The best way to mitigate them is to limit their food sources. Spray your yard to treat it for the things they like to eat - bugs and grubs!

DID YOU KNOW?

Armadillos are used in leprosy research because their body temperatures are low enough for them to contract the most virulent form of the disease.
